A deep dive into how the Elevate team at Uber is using Voltaiq to shape the future of urban mobility.
At the recent International Battery Seminar in Fort Lauderdale, we got to hear Tushar Swamy, a senior cell engineer at Uber, talk about his company’s vision for the future of urban mobility: a vision of multi-modal transport encompassing electric bikes, ride sharing, and even aircraft.
In this talk, Tushar walks the audience through the requirements for an aircraft, specifically eVTOL (Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) as part of Uber's Elevate program. Elevate is developing small, battery-powered aircraft that takes off vertically, cruises safely, and lands vertically.
As a cell engineer, Tushar has to drive a complex set of decisions in the context of each transportation application. Tushar’s work includes cell selection – from new cell vendors to new chemistries – to cell testing use cases, including charge and discharge rates. Tushar’s team is working with partners to qualify battery cells, develop test protocols to evaluate lifetime performance, and build comprehensive battery and vehicle system models to inform viable design paths.
Uber’s battery division operates hundreds of battery test channels from multiple vendors, and the team knows from experience that processing all that data manually is cumbersome and impractical.
